By Ex-Chief Fred Hess
July 24, 2024

On Sunday, July 21st, 2024 just after 18:03 hours, the Rocky Point Fire Department was activated for a signal 14, Vehicle Fire threatening a structure. Immediately all chiefs were responding with crews building in all stations. Upon arrival of Chief of Department McCarrick and 1st assistant Chief Martin, it was decided to transmit the 35 due to heavy fire conditions rapidly increasing among the structure. Ladder 14 was first in, putting a line into operation to attempt the combat the blaze. Correct Mutuals were directed towards the scene as 15 rolled in to secure a water supply to continue operations. Crews were met with heavy flames pouring from the vehicle with extension to the structure and a heavy smoke condition throughout the structure. Engine 7 was soon on scene also, as the bulk of the fire became knocked down, with Chief McCarrick releasing mutuals that were not already on the road. After lots of overhaul, damage was evaluated by crews, also assuring all hotspots had been cooled. Primaries were clear and by 18:26, a signal 4 condition was acknowledged and transmitted signifying the alarm was under control. PSEG and a fire marshal were requested to the scene and arrived soon after. After over an hour into the alarm, units became available as able. By 19:43 all chiefs were 28 and the scene was passed over to the Brookhaven town fire marshals office. A quick first due fire for the crew of 14. ( Story & photos courtesy of First Due Firemedia)
