On 11/21/23 the department received a report of a commercial structure fire at the Tesla Science Center. Upon arrival of the chiefs a reconnaissance was performed and a large volume of fire was observed in the rear and spreading rapidly. E-7 arrived 1st due and initiated operations for commercial structure fire operations. E-17 arrived 2nd due and was tasked with supplying water. Tower Ladder-14 arrived and placed there apparatus to drive the spreading fire back to its spot or origin to preserve the historic parts of the building. E-15 arrived and secured a water source outside the property to ensure positive water would be constant and operations would not be disrupted. The depts fire police units provided safe zones around the area for the safety of operating members. EMS members also stood by to treat any injuries that would arise and rehab of members. Due to the complexity of the incident mutual aid was requested from numerous surrounding Fire depts and various EMS agencies. The town of Brookhaven sent representatives from the highway dept as well. The incident in total lasted well into the night and into the following morning in adverse weather conditions. There was one minor injury reported transported by the RPFD EMS members. The cause is under investigation by the Town of Brookhaven Fire Marshall’s Office.
